European and Eastern Theory Regarding Madness and Separation in U.S. Latino Literature

Abstract

This study investigates the interrelation of the themes of madness, conformity and separation among cultural groups and what European theory and Eastern thought have to say about these themes as they apply to U.S. Latino literature. Aspects of culture in U.S. Latino literature are addressed through the studies of European thought in the writings of French philosopher Michel Foucault. Postmodernism in Eastern thought is also examined as it applies to the aforementioned themes in U.S. Latino literature through the prism of the writings of Kahlil Gibran and Saint Anthony of Egypt.
